Environmental

Chatwin Engineering’s Environmental Division was officially launched in 2005, though we have used environmentally sustainable design and planning principles for much longer than that.

Today, our staff biologists provide environmental services to land developers, local governments and First Nations across Vancouver Island.

Our Environmental services include:

  • Canadian Environmental Assessment Act studies
  • biophysical investigations and inventories
  • marine habitat inventories
  • sediment and erosion control plans
  • environmental construction monitoring
  • fish and wildlife habitat studies and assessments
  • land use feasibility studies
  • land use planning
  • habitat protection planning
  • bioengineering planning and implementation
  • rare plant inventories
  • conservation covenant consultation and registration
  • environmental impact assessments
  • environmental permitting and approvals
  • protection plans and environmental monitoring

We have an excellent working knowledge of watercourse protection requirements, as well as new Riparian Areas Regulation and Assessment requirements, and we work extensively with provincial and federal fisheries staff and municipalities.

Our projects typically require direct consultation and permit approvals with provincial and federal agencies such as the Ministry of Environment and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Several projects have required the development of environmental mitigation measures and compensation plans for habitat loss.

We work extensively with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ marine habitat representatives for Vancouver Island and have completed several Canadian Environmental Assessment Act assessment studies for projects involving First Nations, private land developers and provincial corporations including BC Ferry Corporation and BC Hydro.
