1982 Chatwin Engineering Ltd. opens its office in Nanaimo, with a staff of

1983 Chatwin purchases its first microcomputer and models over 40 municipal
water distribution systems in its first 3 years.
1984 Chatwin is one of the first companies to successfully convert to Computer
Assisted Design (CAD) using microcomputers. We design the new water system
and STEP sewage system for Protection Island in Nanaimo using an XT.
1985 A department is established to service First Nation’s clients in
British Columbia and Chatwin eventually becomes the largest and most successful
First Nation Engineering Consultant on Vancouver Island.
1986 Because of its leadership in technology, many municipal clients ask Chatwin
to provide a service to develop their CAD strategies. This involves a recommended
approach, software selection, hardware purchases, staff training, and cadastral
development.
1987 Chatwin is awarded a contract by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada to
provide training for maintenance personnel of First Nations Tribes throughout
British Columbia. This very successful program continues for the next several
years.
1988 Chatwin Engineering becomes the major consultant to Centra Gas for the
design of the gas distribution system for Vancouver Island municipalities.
The distribution of natural gas to Vancouver Island, and the resultant improvement
in air quality, is the single greatest environmental benefit to Vancouver Island
of the decade.
1989 Chatwin becomes the leader in maintenance training for First Nations
and small utilities, develops training seminars and conventions designed for
small systems, publishes training manuals, and produces training videos.
1990 Chatwin Engineering is selected as the Civil Engineering Consultant to
plan the $1 billion Inland Island Highway on Vancouver Island. This is the
largest transportation project ever undertaken by the Provincial Government
to date.
1991 Chatwin’s experience in modeling water distribution systems makes
it a leader in the field, obtaining major water distribution computer modeling
assignments from both the Greater Victoria Water District and the Greater Nanaimo
Water District for both time dependant and time independent studies. Chatwin’s
experienced staff is asked to be guest instructors on these topics at major
universities across North America.
1992 This year marks the successful completion of a six year program to construct
new sanitary sewer systems and water supply systems for nine Nuu-chah-nulth
Tribal Council Tribes on the West Coast of Vancouver Island.
1993 Chatwin is assigned the position of Coordinator for the construction
of the new Parkway through Nanaimo by the City of Nanaimo.
1994 Chatwin Engineering starts its Employee Ownership Plan to transition
the company into a broad based employee owned company.
1995 Chatwin starts a service to provide Economic Development Plans for our
First Nations clients. Our first client uses the plan to reduce their financial
dependency on government from 100% to 20% in seven years.
1996 The Company retains its first outside Board of Directors to help guide
Chatwin into the future. This was a first for a small private engineering company
in British Columbia.
1997 Chatwin Engineering completes a large new source water system for the
Kyuquot First Nation on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, replacing a contaminated
surface source with a confined well, which improves the health of this community.
1998 The leaky condo problem in British Columbia creates a demand for professionals
that understand Building Science. Chatwin Engineering responds to this need
by establishing their Building Science department.
1999 With much celebration, the Company moves into its new office building
in Nanaimo. This new high technology building is designed to accommodate the
needs of a dynamic engineering company.
2000 Chatwin Engineering opens its Victoria branch office to service the needs
of their southern Vancouver Island clients.
2001 Chatwin receives the Business Excellence
Award as the Best Professional Business of the Year.
2002 The Snaw-naw-as First
Nations has chronic failure of their septic tile
fields, which creates a serious health and environmental problem for the
area. Chatwin Engineering develops the concept of a collection system, treatment
and ocean outfall that solves the Snaw-naw-as First Nations problem.
2003 Chatwin Engineering is selected as the project manager
for the first Traditional Use Study of Marine Resources for a pilot project
to help in
undoing the logjam
for offshore oil and gas on the West Coast of Canada.
2004 Chatwin Engineering launches its Environmental Sciences Department providing an important new dimension to their range of client services.
2005 Chatwin Engineering opened up their Vancouver office to service clients in the lower mainland.
2006 Due to a rapid increase in growth and size of the company, Chatwin Engineering restructures their operational team to include a Vice President of Civil Engineering and a Vice President of Building Science.
2007 Chatwin Engineering Proudly celebrates 25 years of business. Since its inception in 1982 by Brian Chatwin, the company has grown from 2 employees to 38 employees in 2007.
