Event Details: Dance and Silent Auction at Bowen Park in Nanaimo
On Saturday, September 23rd there will be a fund raiser held at Bowen Park in Nanaimo to raise money for the people of Mtunthama Village in Malawi, Africa.
The adults and children living in this village are hungry and infected with HIV/AIDS. There is a shortage of money to help fund programs to assist the people of Mtunthama with their medical and nutritional needs.
Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world whose people are dying in unimaginable numbers. Daily there are over 200 people dying from AIDS alone. It is estimated that 48% of the children living in this country are malnourished. It is fact that one in four children will die before they reach the age of 5. The children spend their days searching for their next meal and their hope for survival is minimal with repeated famines, droughts and HIV/AIDS.
In 2005, a native Nanaimo man and nurse, Kyle Danielson, traveled to Africa only to see first hand just how desperate the situation was with the native people. Under Kyle’s leadership, the school of nursing at UVIC campaigned and was able to raise $6,000 for the village of Mtunthama. As a result of the fundraising accomplishment made by the group of UVIC students, Kyle is now able to bring enough medicine into Malawi to help 10,000 people.
With the small success that are taking place in this small village each day, coupled with our help and the help of others, we may be able to assist the people of Mtunthama reach a state of sustainability and self-sufficiency in no time.
The Bowen Park fundraising efforts will be focused on assisting the people of Mtunthama Village and their life-saving clinic.
