Greenshores Project Environmental Assessment (CEAA) Snaw-naw-as land near (Nanoose Bay, BC )

Chatwin Engineering Ltd is proud to have completed one of the first Greenshores Shoreline restoration projects on Vancouver Island.

This project involved the restoration of 100m of eroding beach located on the Snaw’naw’as First Nation reserve near Nanoose Bay BC.

Funded by Indian and Northern Affairs, the project included the completion of an Environmental Assessment as per CEAA, a detailed bathymetric study to model both coastal influence from wind and wave, the design and construction of a natural coastal dune (once present), including the import of 3000 cubic meters of sand, gravel, and cobbles, as well as the placement of natural beach logs and the planting of over 3000 native shoreline and riparian plants.

This project transformed a coastline with out-dated, and unsightly hard-source coastal armoring into a beautiful and sustainable soft-shore through natural dune construction and vegetation transplanting restoration.

See how our Civil Engineering Division was able to add value to the design of the community’s sewer system with this project, and restore the local clamming industry.
